The Global Innovation Index (GII)

The Global Innovation Index (GII) is an annual report and ranking that assesses the innovation capabilities and performance of countries around the world. It provides valuable insights into a country’s innovation ecosystem, which includes factors such as research and development (R&D) investment, education, infrastructure, business sophistication, and the overall environment for innovation across seven pillars namely Institution, Human capital and research, Infrastructure, Market sophistication, Business sophistication, Knowledge and technology outputs and Creative outputs. The GII evaluates the innovation performance of 132 economies highlighting their innovation strengths and areas for improvement and the ranking is based on performance.

According to the 2023 Global Innovation Index (GII), Mauritius retains its first position in Sub-Saharan Africa but have dropped to the 57th position. Mauritius is followed by South Africa (59th), Botswana (85th), Cabo verde (91st) Senegal (93th), Namibia (96th) Ghana (99th) and (Kenya (100th),  Mauritius ranks highest within the region in Institutions (26th), Human capital and research (64th), Market sophistication (24th) and Creative outputs (57th). It leads worldwide in Venture capital investors (1st) and ranks 5th in Venture capital received.
